During the meeting of the Public Safety Committee, held in Montreal on August 11, the director of LAKAY made a clear request: that the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) implement the only recommendation made by the experts which explicitly calls for a moratorium on police stops.
For LAKAY, racial profiling doesn't necessarily begin with an arrest. It can start with a simple question: "Where are you going?", "What are you doing here?", or "Why are you here?". These interventions, when they disproportionately target certain communities, can contribute to creating a climate of mistrust and insecurity.
In Montreal, but also in Repentigny, Terrebonne and several other communities in Quebec, racialized people continue to face the consequences of racial profiling and discriminatory police practices.
LAKAY believes it is now time to move from commitments to concrete actions. A moratorium on police stops must be accompanied by a review of police practices, transparent accountability, and measures aimed at sustainably restoring trust between communities and police services.
Racial profiling is not just a Montreal issue. It is a problem that concerns all of Quebec and requires a province-wide response.
LAKAY therefore reiterates its demand: a moratorium on police stops throughout Quebec.
