Repentigny, August 14, 2026 — LAKAY extends its sincerest congratulations to Mr. Glenn Dubé, elected Chief of the Atikamekw Council of Manawan for a four-year term. LAKAY also congratulates the six elected councillors — Mario Ottawa, Jean-Roch Ottawa, Patrice Ottawa, Paul-Émile Ottawa, Claudia Newashish and Ghislain Quitich — and commends the work of outgoing Chief Sipi Flamand.
This election comes just days after a significant meeting between our two communities. The 1er Last August, LAKAY accompanied a group of 150 people from the Black community of Lanaudière and the greater Montreal area to Manawan. The day, which included welcoming them, discussions, a dinner to foster connections, and a drumming workshop, helped to forge genuine bonds between the Atikamekw Nation and the Afro-descendant communities.

What began on the 1ster "August was not a one-off visit, but the beginning of a relationship," says Pierre Richard Thomas, Executive Director of LAKAY. "We are extending a hand to Chief Dubé and his council, and we intend to work with them."»
LAKAY intends to pursue this rapprochement through joint activities, inter-community exchanges and the establishment of a lasting memorandum of understanding between the two communities.
