Facilitating Multicultural Support and the Integration of Legal and Educational Links with Society
The FAMILIES project supports families from the cultural communities of Lanaudière whose case is being followed by the Youth Protection Directorate.
Why this project?
A family that recently arrived in Quebec and finds itself in contact with youth protection faces several difficulties at once: a system they do not know, opaque legal vocabulary, sometimes a language that is not their own, and expectations regarding the education of children that do not always correspond to those of their country of origin.
For their part, the professionals involved must assess family situations whose cultural context is sometimes beyond their grasp. Mutual misunderstanding can then worsen a situation that could have been resolved differently.
The FAMILIES project works on both sides of this relationship.
Two parts
Workshops for parents — «Educational methods in the Quebec context»
These meetings explain the Quebec legal framework surrounding children's education, the role and operation of youth protection services, parents' rights and responsibilities, and available resources. The goal is not to judge parenting practices, but to provide parents with the necessary information to understand what is expected of them and to make their voices heard.
Intercultural awareness workshops for stakeholders
These sessions are aimed at professionals in youth protection. They cover migration realities, cultural references in education and discipline, the effects of the language barrier on the assessment of a situation, and biases that may influence a decision.
Who is the project aimed at?
To families from the cultural communities of Lanaudière interacting with youth protection, and to the intervention teams that support them.
