Repentigny, October 30, 2022. The organization Lakay welcomes the Quebec Superior Court's decision prohibiting the end of often abusive traffic stops. Furthermore, Justice Michel Yergeau acknowledges the existence of racial profiling in Quebec in his lengthy report, which is available to the public.
«"The ban on random stops by a Superior Court judge is an important step in the fight against systemic racism. This decision will not stop profiling, but it can reduce stops based on the race, ethnicity or origin of the driver," Lakay responded.
The organization points out that the Human Rights Tribunal recently ordered the City of Repentigny to compensate François Ducas, a Black teacher who was a victim of racial profiling. Several other complaints are before the Human Rights Commission and the Police Ethics Commission for the same reasons.
«"We invite every level of government and human rights organizations to support the order of the Superior Court of Quebec," Lakay concluded on the matter.
