Repentigny, June 15, 2026 – In light of recent revelations concerning the dismantling of a team of police officers from the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) following allegations of racist and discriminatory behaviour, LAKAY is calling for an independent public inquiry into the extent of racism within several police forces in Quebec, including the police forces of Repentigny, Terrebonne and Mascouche.
These revelations raise serious concerns about the organizational culture of certain police institutions. For LAKAY, this is not an isolated incident, but a symptom of a deeper problem denounced for many years by Black, Indigenous, Arab, and racialized communities.
«Unfortunately, we are not surprised by this situation. For years, citizens have been reporting experiences of racial profiling, discrimination and unfair treatment. Too often, their voices have been ignored or minimized,» says Pierre Richard Thomas, director of LAKAY.
The organization believes that internal investigations and disciplinary measures, while important, are no longer sufficient to restore public trust. An independent public inquiry would help document the extent of the problem, hear from victims, identify systemic causes, and formulate concrete recommendations to prevent such behavior.
LAKAY calls on the Quebec government to act with transparency and courage to ensure that all citizens can benefit from fair, equitable treatment that respects their fundamental rights.
