Dear Europe and America, I, Haiti, once was called the pearl of the Antilles, the honey that makes your delicate taste buds dance. Have I become the shovel that sweeps up the garbage of your endless quarrels? The first Black people to proudly display our flag, the first to be independent, yet you hold me back with your white ropes.

Where would we be without our African ancestors who shed their blood and sacrificed their freedom of body and mind so that their children could shine like the burning African sun and dance to the drums with smiles on their faces, as they once did? Where would we be if it weren't for those who freed their consciences despite the shackles around their necks?

«"Ah shit!" were the first words I uttered when I checked the time after waking with a start. Today was a hearing I had scheduled myself at the Housing Tribunal, and I had woken up an hour beforehand. The day hadn't even begun, and my heart felt like it was going to leap out of my chest.
