Repentigny, August 1, 2024 – Three years ago, on August 1, 2021, Jean Junior Olivier, a young Black man from Repentigny, tragically lost his life in front of his home during a police intervention. On this day of remembrance, our thoughts are with his family and friends, as well as all the families of victims of police violence in Canada.
On the day of his death, his mother called an ambulance for help for her son, who was suffering from mental health problems. Unfortunately, this plea for help turned into a tragic death; Jean René Junior was shot dead by police.
This incident raises serious questions about police-Black interactions in Repentigny. According to a report by independent researchers, Black people in this city are twice as likely to be stopped by police as other citizens. This alarming statistic highlights the racial disparities and systemic biases present within the policing system.
