Repentigny, October 24, 2024 \u2013 Lakay welcomes the recent decision of the Quebec Court of Appeal, which upholds that section 636 of the Highway Safety Code, which allows for stops without valid cause, is a blatant discriminatory practice against Black people. This decision represents a turning point in the fight against racism and racial profiling, particularly on Quebec roads, where thousands of citizens have been victims of this systemic injustice.<\/p>\n
We commend the courageous lawyers who brought this case to court, including Mike Sim\u00e9on, a lawyer of Haitian origin, and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Their unwavering determination and commitment paved the way for this major legal victory. Thanks to them, the voices of racialized communities have finally been heard.<\/p>\n
This court decision confirms what Lakay, among other organizations, has been denouncing for years: racial profiling is a reality experienced by far too many citizens of Repentigny and elsewhere. During the trial, Lakay testified to the numerous injustices our community has suffered, thus reinforcing the relevance and urgency of such a decision.<\/p>\n
However, it is crucial to remember that this victory is only one step in our fight against systemic racism and racial profiling. The mobilization must continue. We must remain vigilant and pursue our efforts to eradicate all forms of discrimination, both on the roads and in other spheres of society.<\/p>\n
